CBBC Newsround presented in BSL, for Deaf Awareness week!

Newsround BSL
Deaf Parents Deaf Children were delighted to see the episode of Newsround being presented in BSL this week. Only a shame that it was only for Deaf Awareness week as having a BSL presenter would be beneficial for all children, deaf or hearing to have access to Newsround in BSL as well as English. Especially when children in this country watch this programme regularly in schools. The benefits would be countless – hearing children get to learn another language, it would raise awareness of BSL which is much needed to raise the quality of life for deaf people, deaf children won’t be left out while watching this in school, children who are hearing who use sign language to communicate won’t be left out, having BSL as well as English presented would promote bilingualism.

Access to the news in BSL should be a fundamental right for deaf children who communicate in BSL.   Appropriately qualified and skilled interpreters is not guaranteed in schools across the country, having the news delivered by qualified BSL signers will ensure all deaf children who communicate in BSL have consistent access to the news every day from qualified signers.

Appeal for donations!

We are looking for financial support to enable our group to continue to grow and organise more events for deaf children of deaf parents.

Deaf Parents Deaf Children (DPDC) is a group for deaf parents with deaf children from all over the UK.  We are a voluntarily run group with aspirations to become a registered charity and in turn, grow to support more parents and help influence policy makers in order to achieve the best life outcomes for all deaf children. Events organised by us allow deaf children from throughout the UK to meet other deaf children from similar deaf backgrounds and to use British Sign Language together as their natural language.

Deaf parents have limited access to resources and information about deaf children as the majority of today’s organisations and events are designed for hearing parents of deaf children. 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, so there is a desperate need for more events around the country for this minority group.  Workshops for deaf parents give them the opportunity to discuss issues relating to being a parent of a deaf child with other deaf parents.

Discussions at our workshops have always centred around the best interests of the deaf child – how best to educate a deaf child, schooling options, SEN statements and how to deal with audiologists, funding for interpreters for kids after-school clubs and parent evening meetings are all examples.  Any financial support you can give will allow us to organise and fund more workshops around the country to reach out and support more deaf children.

DPDC Camping 2015 – Report and photos!

DPDCCamping05
The Ashbourne Heights Country Park in Derbyshire hosted the first Deaf Parents Deaf Children Camping event over the August bank holiday weekend.  All the kids had an amazing time cycling, swimming, playing games, going on walks and making new friends!  The weekend was such a great success that everyone was in agreement that it should be an annual holiday for everyone.  The kids loved the fact that they could sign to anyone in the big group and had a range of adults and kids to socialise and play with!  This weekend would not have happened had it not been for Helen Phillips and Jason Vessey who organised the event – thank you so much!
