CBBC Newsround presented in BSL, for Deaf Awareness week!

Newsround BSL
Deaf Parents Deaf Children were delighted to see the episode of Newsround being presented in BSL this week. Only a shame that it was only for Deaf Awareness week as having a BSL presenter would be beneficial for all children, deaf or hearing to have access to Newsround in BSL as well as English. Especially when children in this country watch this programme regularly in schools. The benefits would be countless – hearing children get to learn another language, it would raise awareness of BSL which is much needed to raise the quality of life for deaf people, deaf children won’t be left out while watching this in school, children who are hearing who use sign language to communicate won’t be left out, having BSL as well as English presented would promote bilingualism.

Access to the news in BSL should be a fundamental right for deaf children who communicate in BSL.   Appropriately qualified and skilled interpreters is not guaranteed in schools across the country, having the news delivered by qualified BSL signers will ensure all deaf children who communicate in BSL have consistent access to the news every day from qualified signers.
